A pitch for a light sculpture inside the university library of Groningen. This eventually unrealised project became second out of seventeen candidates. The idea of the sculpture grew out of a shared love for typography. On one hand the love as seen through the eyes of graphical designers and on the other hand the love for typography as you read in books and the knowledge that it shares. This is the essance of a university aswell as the library; sharing knowledge. The light sculpture envisions the history of the transfer of knowledge. From the depths of the library the letters fall and crash downwards. They bounce against the walls and plateau's and are reshapen by the building itself. Much like how the knowledge itself changes by the way it is transferred by one person unto the next. In the beginning there were only stories. Whoever told them could give their own spin on whatever it was they told. Writing was already a less subjective form of sharing but could easily alter per version. Eventually the press was invented. Small physical letters made it possible to print in larger number. But every book would still be different. A lot less then previous but purely by existing in another time and space than the other pressings it differs. The digital age has eliminated this problem. A letter can be duplicated indefinitly and, because it exists in a different reality, it stays the same letter. The letters fall, break, adapt, but eventually the total image is one of the history of copying.
